the minimum requirements for ubuntu is a hard drive with 15 gigs minimum.
some people have succeeded with only 10 gigs, but you'll have to strip the installation of lots of programs.

you might want to try lubuntu, xubuntu or damn small linux.

I'm able to install on 8GB virtual disk, and I didn't try smaller size. Fresh Natty installation uses less than 3GB. At which installation stage are you blocked ? Could you reach manual partitioning ? I could try next week on a 4.4GB virtual disk.
How many RAM do you have ? Natty requires 512 MB to be comfortable.
Which is usage of this computer ?

My experience on the 11.04 Ubuntu Desktop install was as follows:

HW: Uniprocessor Pentium 4 2.5GHz with 1GB primary memory
Standard dual PATA IDE controllers

I had a large harddisk (and no means to backup data) so I searched
around for some old disk drives. I found two (4.3GB and 3.5GB)
I attempted to run a CDROM install sequence got to second window

Preparing to install Ubuntu
For best results, please ensure that this computer:

X has at least 4.4GB available drive space

------------------------------------------------
X was presented instead of check mark and no Forward button
active to even attempt a override of install sequence
---------------------------------------------
I am informing launchpad since it states 4.4GB as a minimum
install requirement and still I could not proceed. Granted
I had the sum (4.3GB + 3.5GB) across two drives

This would be a ubiquity specific problem. If nothing else
the reported 4.4GB can be up'ed to inform users of the
minimum requirements of install. This could bypass the
problem but the low level disk sizing routine needs a better
scripted rewrite (or as been reported back to me) merge both
physical disks into a single logical disk and proceed with
that option would be a reasonable workaround.)

This is a very specific issue, and I doubt that some work will be done to solve it.
You can try the alternative installer: www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download

Can you help with this problem?
