I suggest you use LUbuntu, it is nice and small and uses few resources so your OS will be responsive

I have created the iso file for lubuntu but the usb creator (unetbootin) does not list this version.
Which version should I use please

You need to point unetbootin to downloaded .iso file.

Managed to load lubunto to usb but on trying to boot I get the message that there is not enough disc space to load so no go on that score.I did hear that there is a way to add more capacity by using a usb memory stick but it has to be programmed in.Anymore help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Hmm, you could try the minimal ISO, then install the LUbuntu desktop from there. This bug is being discussed in the Lubuntu email list.
