Bad install of 11.04

Asked by Jerry Tucker

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. and did not get a good installation.

It seems that both systems are still on the computer. None of the programs with open up, but just freeze up when an attempt is made.

I got a disk for 11.04 and tried all three methods of installation with no luck. As a final attempt, I had the disk to wipe out all data and re install 11.04, but no luck there either.

I suppose at this point, I need to re format the hard drive and then install 11.04, but I do not know how. Any help will be very much appreciated. Jerry T

Jerry, Place the CD in an restart your computer, it will then wipe from it when booted again (the CD will boot from it). If the re-formating try two does not work, you can come back for more assistance. What is your system by the way?

I restarted with the CD in the drive. The system booted up, but nothing worked. I then restarted, held down F12 and had the system boot to the CD drive.

I then set it to install 11.04, which is underway now.

This computer is a Dell Optiplex, 3.o GHz, Pentium 4, 1 MB Cache 800 front side bus.
NTFS file syatem, 1GB RAM 400MHz DDR 2x512.

Additional info. I have been running Ubuntu on this machine starting with 8.04. I recently upgraded to 11.04.
Then the update manager wanted me to upgrade to 10.10 and I complied, without realizing that I had 11.04 on the machine.
That's when the trouble started. I upgraded again to 11.04, and nothing has worked since except for the browser, and it will eventually freeze up.
No programs will open up, so I can not make any adjustments. Thanks for your help.

11.04 installed again but nothing works. No programs will open such as Computer Janitor, or Update Manager. They attempt to open, then freeze.

I am going to re load Windows XP back on the machine, and maybe try Ubuntu 11.04 later.

Thank you for your help with this, Jerry T.

Jerry,

It sounds like you have a bad install cd. Please try downloading it from a mirror site, burn another dvd and use that.

Please MD5 downloaded ISO image: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
After please check made CD: http://zootlinux.blogspot.com/2010/05/check-disc-for-defects-in-ubuntu-1004.html
If after it continues to fail, please provide partition table (sudo fdisl -l).
