I have a laptop with Windows 7 and am blocked from running Ubuntu from the CD I made. Any ideas?

Asked by Alastair Arnott

I wanted to try Ubuntu initially in parallel with my existing operating system (Windows 7). The disk will not start on it own and the jolt it into action software gets to near the end of the download when it fails and a message says I do not have permission to do this.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

Before you install I suggest you use Windows 7 to resize it's own partition (after rerunning your backups) to make free space to install Ubuntu to

Dear Actionparsnip,

I've burned a new CD as slowly as possible and have attended to point 3. I
don't know what an MD5 is so I haven't done that.

I have made progress though. I now get to choose an operating system and get
a purple Ubuntu screen. Unfortunately this revents to a screen that
indicates failure and seems to require initramfs. It's supposed to be
self-diagnostic, but I don't understand the codes.

Sorry to bother you.

Alastair.

If you haven't MD5 tested the ISO then you have no way of knowing the data is complete and consistent.
