Windows Ubuntu dual boot question- Will 11.04 over write my windows ??

Asked by Doug

Hi all I currently have a windows 7 / ubuntu 8.10 dual boot. I want to upgrade Ubuntu to 11.04 edition. Will this over write my windows 7? And are there any other issues I should know before upgrading, since I have a dual boot? I would rather not lose anything on the windows partition side, or reload 7. Any info appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Doug

You can check the link below, but upgrading to 11.04 from 8.10 looks like a long and difficult path.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes
Backup your files from the 8.10 installation, and put a fresh copy of 11.04 in the same partition 8.10 is now. You certainly do not have to touch the Windows partition, but backing up is still a really good idea. Never accept any installation offers to "use the whole disk", and you should be able to identify the partition you want when you are put into the manual setup. You can always try the 11.04 directly from the CD before installation to determine if you have any hardware issues, but since you have 8.10 running, 11.04 should run too. Check on what drivers you are using on the 8.10 installation for wireless (if any), and video so you can install them on the 11.04 if you have problems.

If you install 11.04.2 on same partitions as 8.10 WITHOUT formating, the installer (Ubiquity) with replace system files but keep user files. For this, you will have to use manual partitioning option, and mount right partition on right folder (easy if you only one partition, in this case folder is "/").
But Ubfan is right: backup.
