how can i get LINUX operating system to install on my computer?

I recently found an old disc from LINUX 2008, from a magazine, i've tried it but it wont install.
and my request is, were can i get an up to date copy of LINUX operating system which i can install, an i can then get rid of xp.
i also have Ubuntu disc b.but that only lasts while its running , it starts from scratch every time i start my computer.
i would be very grateful if someone can put me wise on this,

You might want to install using your Ubuntu CD, but when using the install option. The Ubuntu liveCD is meant to start from scratch every time you restart, which is why it is necessary to install to the hard drive. You may want to make sure that the Ubuntu version is 10.04 or newer (one made in 2010 or more recent). If you need a new disc, you can go to the Ubuntu download page and download a new disc. If you are unable to get a new disc, you can install an unsupported version and simply upgrade until you get to a supported version.

Also, please do not ask questions that are not specific to UCK (Ubuntu Customization Kit) on this page. It would be better if this would be a question for Ubuntu, instead of UCK.
