Ubuntu 11.04 installation

Asked by Iqbal

Hi,
I have a laptop with following configuration,

Intel Core2Duo, T6600
nvidia chipset
64bits
Dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10
4GB RAM and 500GB HDD

I have been using ubuntu 9.10 without any problem on this laptop.

Recently, I was installing ubuntu 11.04 from Live CD. It showed ubuntu 11.04 screen with 4 blinking dots, after some times ubuntu 11.04 disappeared from the screen and a live mouse pointer came up on empty ubuntu desktop. Thereafter nothing changed. I could neither use ubuntu 11.04 from live CD nor install ubuntu 11.04.

I faced the same problem in installing ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10.

How to install ubuntu 11.04?

I used to boot option nomodeset by pressing F6. Then I was successful in booting from live CD. After installing ubuntu 11.04 with option nomodeset, will I have to compromise with functionality/performance of ubuntu?

If I remember, mode setting was added in kernel to avoid during boot and startup of Linux (before user desktop is displayed) that screen becomes black a fraction of second between startup steps. So as soon you are logged, it should have no impacts.
Am I right, actionparsnip ?

I apologize. I forgot to provide you this link http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/ which will explain you how make workaround persistent.

Hi,
After booting from LiveCD, I chosen the boot option, by pressing F6, nomodeset. Then I installed the os without any problem till now.

However, it was reporting that some unity one can not be used due to some hardware issues. So it shows classic ubuntu 11.04 desktop. The laptop has nvidia cards with intel core 2 duo processor.

Did you install and activate proprietary driver ?

Good Morning,

At the time of installation, it was asking to download and install proprietary drivers, like flash player, mpg-3 etc. I skipped this move.

Earlier (Ubuntu 9.10), in System-Preference there was one item Appearance. This option used to download and activate nvidia drivers. But this time (Ubuntu 11.04), I could not find this option under Preferences.

Any suggestions please.

I have this in Natty on System->Administration->Added driver (not exact text as it's translation of French).

Good Morning,

Yesterday, I faced different problem.

I started ubuntu 11.04. The log-in screen came up. At that time my mobile data cable was plugged-in. The moment i clicked to enter password, the screen froze. I rebooted by pressing power button. Then after rebooting, I was put on (initramfs) prompt. I do not know, what to do next. I again rebooted and tried to install the OS from LiveCD. First, the installer was taking more than usual time. Then I specified, partitions. Thereafter, it was showing saving pakages and finally it showed the message that the installer has crashed.
If I again boot from live cd then message comes up that disk is not healthy. I can not access my home folder also using live cd. I fear my data loss.

Now is there any way out, first to back-up data and then restore the system?

Should I post it as separate question, now it is a different problem? The subject of this post is "Ubuntu 11.04 installation".

Yes, you should post another question. It will also get attention of others answerers.
About unhealthy disk, disconnect all USB devices, boot on CD, then choose "Try" instead of "Install".
System->Administration->Gparted partition editor, select partitions and check.
