Ubuntu installed on a Dell PowerEdge 6600

Asked by Jeffery Ashmore

My company would like to install Ubuntu on a Dell PowerEdge 6600 server. This server is currently running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and it configured with RAID5. Our concern is the availability of drivers for the hardware. Does anyone know if the necessary drivers are available?

According to http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/66x0_specs.pdf, the PowerEdge 6600 supports some GNU/Linux distributions. Therefore, it seems likely that there would be driver support. For additional encouraging information (as well as information relevant to getting drivers for old PowerEdge hardware installed and running on Linux-based operating systems), see http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Old_FAQ. However, the only way to know for sure if it will work--and perform well--is to test it out.

Eliah,

Thank you for your speedy response to my inquiry. I was aware that Dell supports Red Hat Linux distributions for this Dell PowerEdge 6600 server. Seeing that my supervisor is very interested in using Ubuntu, do you have any information regarding drivers for this server and Ubuntu? The two biggest drivers of concern would be for the Dell PERC 3/DC & PERC 3/DCL RAID controller and the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC card. Do you know if I could get drivers for these hardware devices?

Drivers are related to kernel version and not GNU/Linux distribution, so if they work on RHL5, they should work also on same kernel on Ubuntu. The single issue should be they are released, if they are include in a packet, in RPM format for RHL5 and DEB format for Ubuntu.
