Could be the RAM you have, you need minimun 1GB in Ubuntu 10.10, ¿your laptop have 512Mb?

Did you MD5 test the iSO you downloaded?
If you are using a CD/DVD, did you burn it as slowly as possible and did you make the CD testitself for consistency once it started to boot?
512Mb is enough RAM for Ubuntu, the minimum requirement is 256Mb so don't sweat about RAM.

Instead of asking, you should websearch. Please do this in future. You would have found this guide:

A link http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~floydian/md5/md5v12005.zip, but your problem could be in the ram, it is true that could operate at 512 Mb but from personal experience I can tell you there are many who do not

If you have an md5 check is successful then discard the CD, he starts the installation and make the necessary checks to start pressing the escape key and check if it shows any error or warning about hardware

@Eduardo: I installed for test 10.10 on 512MB MB virtual machine, so it should be OK.
If you get a blank screen, look at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-fix-ubuntu-10-04-lts-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup.html

Can you help with this problem?
