iso install Ubuntu file download problem

Asked by Rodney Knight

You say that Ubuntu is free - I have just tried to download Ubuntu for netbook, and your servers reset with 8Mb to go. So downloading 672Mb costs me R300-odd (30 Euro's - I am in South Africa). So do I try again in the hope that it works this time, or do I continue with Windows? Very, very frustrating.

It is free in the way you don't have to pay for it. When you get Windows you pay for it. You need to buy a valid licese for each system you install it to. The fact that you have a flaky connection is no reflection on Ubuntu in ANY way. I personally suggest you use torrents instead of the direct download. It labours the servers less and will give you a faster download which is also pausable.

Adding the "Going back to Windows" stuff doesn't make anyone want to help you any more or less and adds zero value to the question so next time just leave it out. Very frustrating

Also, what is the question. This is just a rant....

Of course it is a rant - unlike the UK, bandwidth is expensive here, so I am entitled to a rant. It was not my flaky coneection - it was flying up until your servers re-set. Is there any other way of accessing the software?

Torrents, like I said. You will download from other users rather than a single spot. This is a questions forum, not a rant forum. Please respect that

Fine - will respect it, but please also note that when you click on 'contact us' on the website, this is the channel it diverts you to, so it is not only questions, but broad contact as well... Will do the torrent thing

Canonical is no longer shipping free CDs but if you get in touch with a local community in South Africa then they would be able to give you one (if they are approved).

Do you have any friends from outside your area? You could have them download it to a CD, then *post* it to you.

Alternately, you can visit a news stand that sells computing magazines and simply buy one of those -- they often have a copy of ubuntu on the cover.

Also, a "server reset" does not mean that the end server has reset. It means that the TCP connection between you and the sever has reset. This can happen if a router en-route dies (remember computer networks are not a point-point network, it is a grid-hopping system). It does not necessarily mean that canonical rebooted their servers.

Rodney:

One more point; no-one here works for canonical (AFAIK), we are volunteers. So this is not going to communicate your message back to canonical, unfortunately.

Can you help with this problem?
