Natty live/install CD boot error

Asked by Andrew Miller

I am brand new to Ubuntu and unfortunately am having a problem even trying it out. I downloaded the Natty CD image (ubuntu-11.04-beta1-desktop-amd64.iso) and burned it to a CD. However, when I boot to the CD, I get the Ubunto logo screen, then I am dropped to a shell with the following error:

(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Andy

I forgot to mention. When I open the .iso image in Nero Express Essentials, I receive a notice that "The entered block size does not correspond to the image length. The block size may be wrong." Unsure if this is relevant or related to the original problem.

Did you md5sum check the downloaded iso?
Did you burn the cd as slowly as possible?
Did you select the media check before trying to install to check the cd
Did you ever do a "memory check" (another menu choice) on your PC.
Doing the above can save you a lot of time struggling with a bad install media.

Are you trying to install inside or outside Windows partition (Wubi) ?
Did you burn ISO image as a CD ISO image and not as a usual file with Nero ?
Please check MD5: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Please check CD: http://zootlinux.blogspot.com/2010/05/check-disc-for-defects-in-ubuntu-1004.html

@Ubfan: I re-downloaded the .iso, burned it at 8x, and successfully booted into Ubuntu. Unfortunately, more problems arose, which I will address in a new Question. I will post a link to that question once I've posted it.

@delance: I am trying to install on a separate partition.

Thank you both for your input.

I'm getting the same error on the 32 bit desktop Natty release.
I downloaded the iso, and have md5 verified it. and burned to CD at minimum speed,
The CD boots OK to the little keyboard = Ubuntu icon, then I hit a key and selected
the media check, which crashes with the following error:
(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
udevd[72]: worker [150] unexpectedly returned with status 0x0100
udevd[72]: worker [150] failed while handling '/devices/virtual/blocl/loop0'
This is on a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with 2gig of memory.
I've tried two different multi bay CD drives, the one that burned the ISO without errors,
and one I think is known to be good.
I tried to do the media check because although this disc runs OK as a live CD,
I've tried to install from it several times without success,
always hanging or showing an i/o error.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

@Mikea
Some rare motherboard have issues with Ubuntu CD. Could you try with a USB key.

@delance
Thanks for the help.

I tried a third multibay CD drive and the install went perfectly,
so in my case this was just a symptom of failing hardware.

Same problem with a hp 6720s, I've tried some suggestions from the forums, many of them arround the F6 options and aditional parameters.

Finally got it working with a ubuntu 10.04 installation, this is consistent with this comment:

The issue is more than likely the latest squashfs-tools update, I am using Debian testing with the 2.6.26-1-i686 Kernel and experienced the same error following the last update. Rolling back squashfs-tools to the Stable version solved the issue for me. I can't be 100% certain with Sid or if you are using a different Kernel but I'd try that first.
