The installation guide for 10.10 is as clear as brick and useless. Need help to install along side Windows.

Asked by Mark Fair

I tried to install Ubuntu. I wish to install it along side windows in another partition for a multi OS setup and have had to cancel the installation several times because it not clear what I need to do next. Many times at the point where I choose to make the install as well a point after the screen where you put in your user name. I know Windows well but would like to have a alternative. I have ran Ubuntu from the CD and like what I see, it seems easy to use. However I can't get passed all the terms you use and the 10.10 installation guide is of no help. Like I said it's as clear as brick. I have tried to install from boot and from the cd while it is running. I would like very much to get it installed the way I want. Once I do I believe it will be much easier learn more about linux systems. Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
MarxFair

There is a known (and not well documented) restriction in the installation process: When you are asked 'who are you' you have to select a username that consists of only lowercase characters and numbers (starting with a lowercase letter).

Manfred: it wasn't obvious in 10.10, but 11.04 has a properly-visible error message in this case.

Can you help with this problem?
