Ubuntu 11.04 won't install

Asked by AXTEL Nemeth

I get the error: out of disk-grub rescue> after installing 11.04 Beta. It makes no difference if I do a clean install , or try and update a 10.10 installation to 11.04 I downloaded Alpha3 daily build for over 3 weeks, and none of them would install, I either got the grub rescue message after install or mostly-it crashed during install, and wouldn't complete. Now Beta1 won't install, getting very concerned about where this is going--10.10 installs perfectly every time .. what do I do to get 11.04 to install? Have tried wiping the hd completely ,fdisking the mbr, nothing works , so far HELP

Does it work if you reinstall GRUB2 from the Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1 live CD/DVD?

unable to reinstall grub....I have 17 computers on my lan..all dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 1nd Windows7. the computer I was trying to install on has had every version since 8.04..never had these kinds of problems before. during one stretch of time I downloaded the daily build every day for over 3 weeks...they all failed to install...the test computer has an AMD 7750 X2, 4gb 800Mhz, 9800gt card ...it could not place grub in the mbr for some reason... finally I made a small partition less tah 1gb as my first partition and installed grub there..that worked! .. I'm very apprehensive about updating my other computers..never had these kinds of probs before thats where things stand now .. thats very iffy

Since you posted this question, Ubuntu 11.04 Natty has gone through extensive development, progressing from Beta 1 to Beta 1, and then to release. It is now considered a stable release. Have you tried download the .iso image for the release version, and seeing if you're able to successfully install Ubuntu 11.04 with that?

Correction: "from Beta 1 to Beta 2, and then to release"

yes-I have it on 2 computers now-they are all just a pretty normal set up with the hd plugged into the mb .The one thing I haven't tried is that in a few of them have a hardware raid controller(no drivers, plug and play-any os sees it as one drive) 10.10 installs on that configuration perfectly -that was also failing to install rite up till the final release. That has to be verified on a test unit before any upgrades happen-I just haven't had the time-keep you posted on that one-if there is an issue there, I'll just keep 10.10 on those machines-I'm a gamer FAST as H*ll with the raid controller (Secondlife player, and here is something-It's faster in linux than windows-direct comparison on the same machine)

ok last night I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 Natty about 30 times on a computer that has the hardware raid controller-8.04 , 8.10 , 9.04 , 9.10 ,10.04 ,10.10all installed perfectly on it as did Windows 2000 , XP , Vista ,and Windows7. 11.04 Natty just wont install Grub in the mbr-period! If you try and upgrade a Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty on one of these computers with the hardware raid controller , it's a 100% failure rate.Yet, you can go right back and reinstall Ubuntu 10.10 and it's flawless!

What that means is that the computers that have the hardware raid controllers, won't be upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 any time soon.

I did find a workaround-make a small primary partition about 1gb, then the primary for the os and last the swap, install Grub in the first small primary partition , and it works-it boots to a desktop. First it gives you some "out of disk not found" messages , cause I'm sure it looks in the mbr for certain things first, then after it stops having a tantrum, it goes ahead and boots like normal. This is a lot of work to have to do all that, obviously you cannot just upgrade an existing 10.10 installation. They got something wrong in 11.04 cause nothing else has this problem with it. I'm not a programmer so I have no idea what.

Never had this much trouble with a new version. I'm reluctant to do a very non-standard installation like this, because of what will happen with future versions, I could just leave it with a 10.10 install (they are running perfect, excepting for the networking(they all stopped being able to mount the network!)) - or choice no3 go with a completely different distro.

I'm stuck really, help

I recommend you report a bug against the package grub-pc. You can do this on one of the computers that had the problem, but on which you implemented the workaround (using the small partition for GRUB), by running "ubuntu-bug grub-pc". Please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully first (and search to see if it's already been reported, which is one of the things that page explains how to do), then after you submit your report, you can link it and this question to each other using the "Link existing bug" link near the top of this question page. Your bug report should be as complete and self-contained as possible--it should not be necessary for the Ubuntu developers to visit this question page, in order to fully understand and appreciate your bug report.

In your bug report, please make sure to include the exact make and model and (if it's different than just the model name, and you know it or are able to find out) chipset of your RAID controller, as well as the hardware configuration of the RAID (e.g., RAID-5, RAID-1, RAID-0). When you search for the bug before reporting it, I recommend you try searching with the RAID controller's brand, model, and chipset names (individually as well as together) to see if that turns up a bug already documenting this problem.

If you find a bug report that already describes your problem, you can indicate that it affects you (with the green "This bug affects..." link near the top of the bug page), post a comment if you have information to contribute, and link this question to the bug (just as you would for your own bug).

the final thing on this was I tried to report a bug. It wasn't possible to report a bug in the normal way because it couldn't get to the desktop, it was impossible to use the program to report a bug. They wouldn't take the report, said I had to come back here and ask a question. So, I got tossed back and forth with no solution.

Starting with v12.04 it now works again :)
