Commented out sources list

Asked by Nanley Chery

When I install the Gutsy RC offline, it comments out my sources. This is a problem because when the installation is complete and I get my wireless working, I have to fumble around for the defaults. Why are offline installations now handled this way?

Hello,
Thank you for your question.
However, please note that this done for security purposes.
If Ubuntu can not verify the validity of the repositories defined in /etc/apt/sources.list it will comment them out.

However, if you wish to discuss this with developers, [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good start for determining which mailing list to use.

No, it's not for security purposes (that's handled in other ways); it's so that apt doesn't just hang uselessly if you really do have no network. Not doing this causes problems with language pack installation in some circumstances (e.g. a broken firewall that drops requests to the mirror rather than accepting or rejecting them). It should be fairly straightforward to enable the commented-out entries using System -> Administration -> Software Sources.

We have a session scheduled at the next developer summit to try to make this work more smoothly.
