I want to start using Ubuntu , I tried to install it but I did not know how to move files from windows to Ubuntu, in short my 2 questions are

1) how do I , when installing , make sure ubuntu picks up the software I wish to continue to use and the movies & music I got on my drive ?

For example I got Itunes for my Ipod , is that compatible with Ubuntu ?

2) How do I install up to dates codecs to ensure I can play all sort of movies?

Thank You , Im starting to use Ubuntu and I think I will stick with it!

Glad you're going to give Ubuntu a try.

Ubuntu is not Windows. Many programs and tools you use on Windows may not be available for use in Ubuntu, however you may find alternatives that may meet or exceed your requirements.

http://www.ubuntu.com/support

This is the place to find all the official documentation, forums, and other online and offline sources of assistance.
And you found launchpad already so you're already one step up in the right direction for getting help.

So to answer your questions.

1) This depends on your situation. If your system is dual boot and the Windows hard disks are sharing the same system, you should be able to see your drives as removable devices and navigate to your Windows folders and copy your files.

-- I should make a caveat at this stage. Reading from a Windows drive to a Linux drive is ok, but writing isn't perfect and not without risk. I would not write to a Windows disk if you do not have to, and to avoid any file corruption you should always "copy" the files, not "cut" or "move" them. This way you will have your originals in good shape.--

2) Codec's are a bit of a issue. Since many (of the good ones) are non-free they are not included. As such some people choose Mediabuntu or Mythbuntu rather than Ubuntu to work with a distro that already has the restricted software/codecs available.

https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/add-applications/C/restricted-software.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/

This document outlines how you can setup Ubuntu to do this if you'd rather just modify your Ubuntu install than reinstall another OS:

HTH's.

Thank you so much Jeruvy , yes I have been reading for a few hours now, I am not that tech savvy. Now I do have several doubts , for example I use Vuze to download torrents , and I have not been able to find if it is or isn´t compatible with ubuntu, I also have an externat 2tb disk and I have moved all that interest me to that external disc.

In regards of the codecs I have downloaded the K lite mega codec pack , do you think this would work with ubuntu? .

Now what would be the best steps to slowly move from windows to ubuntu ?

Thank you again
