Can't install Ubuntu 10.10 on Lenovo Z360

Asked by Ed Ziverts

Hey,

I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new Lenovo IdeaPad Z360, with nothing pre-installed on it, and just couldn't do it. I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit version but once you restart the computer, after installation, it gives you tons of errors and gets stuck in the console mode. There is, however, a difference if you change the BIOS settings for the graphics card. If you choose the 'xp mode' or whatever it was called, the linux asks you for a username and password in console but still you cannot enter the graphical mode. If you choose the 'windows 7' mode or smth in BIOS, the computer, after initial restart, gives you threads of errors and cumbersome codes and then becomes unresponsive.

I also tried installing Ubuntu using a different HDD mode (IDE) but that didn't help either.

Does Legacy OS also has some relevance at all? If I disabled the option, I couldn't even make the computer to read the Ubuntu installation disk.

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

If you can get to a login prompt, it looks like your install worked, but you are having video problems. Since there is only the one OS on the system, hold down the shift key as you boot (with whatever BIOS you used when you got the login prompt). You should get a grub menu, select the safe mode and see if that gets you to the (maybe low res) graphics login. If that does not work, try editing the grub boot command -- type e (instructions on screen) to edit the regular kernel line (linux /boot/.....ro single" add a space two hyphens a space and xforcevesa e.g. -- xforcevesa
Try that. If you can get into any graphics mode, see if you have any proprietary video drivers available under the System/Administration/Additional Drivers. Activate the latest version of whatever video is offered. reboot and see if things are fixed. If you have wireless problems (might have to download a video driver), use a wired connection, those usually work out of the box.
Good Luck
