using ubuntu to replace MS Windows XP Home Edition

Asked by michael Wilchak

Recently upgraded from an older laptop, Toshiba 1135, to a new desktop. I would like to keep the laptop as a fall-back computer, and take it on the road. Trying to find a clean, reliable, and inexpensive generic version of XP is too much hassle. My son recommended that I use Ubuntu instead. I need to reformat and wipe clean the old laptop,..... What preparations are required to acquire and download Ubuntu, in order to make it the new laptop OS ???? thank you.

Go to this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Check out the "Show me how" buttons.

You don't need to re-format the Hard Disk, just install and tell it to "Used the whole disk."

Thank you very much for the quick response. I'll give it a try.
As I understand your answer,...... download the software, and it will write over
the existing OS, removing XP in the process ?????

You download the software, write the image to a disk or a flash card SPECIFICALLY how Ubuntu.com tells you to (VERY important), boot from it at startup through changing BIOS settings or going to boot menu, and try it out!
Once you feel the computer will be fine with Ubuntu, all you do is click the "Install" button, and you are ready to go! Just wait for the installation to finish then restart your computer.

If Ubuntu doesn't work, there are many other Operating Systems similar to it, which might (or might not) be more compatible with your system, such as Fedora (fedoraproject.org), Debian (debian.org), and many others! Do a little bit of research on Wikipedia, and you will find more about these, and more about Ubuntu! Thanks for choosing Ubuntu! :D
