installing Ubuntu without an internet connection

Asked by Laivy Gelerinter

I have an internet connection at work but not at home. At work I put the files for the newest version of Ubuntu on to a USB flash drive. When I brought it home I had two problems: 1) even though in the BIOS setup I ordered the bootup list to first boot from the USB flash drive, when I turned on the computer it booted into Windows (Vista). Is there any way to get it to boot up from the flash drive so I can try the Ubuntu demonstration? 2) when I tried to install Ubuntu on my system alongside Windows at a certain point in the installation process the program tried to establish a connection to the Internet and as I don't have an Internet connection at home it couldn't. At that point the installer exited without installing Ubuntu. Can I intall without an Internet connection and if so how?

Are you sure your system can boot USB?

A web connection is not essential to install the OS

1) there is a choice in the BIOS setup to boot from USB and I moved it to the top of the boot order list.

2) So when it complains about not being able to make a connection what do I do? When I pressed OK it stopped installing.

You may have selected to download 3rd party plugins which WILL require the connection to exist. Everything you need to install the OS is on the CD.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

Okay, so I should do a custom installation and uncheck the Install 3rd party plugins box? I will try again when I am at home later and if it gives an error message I will write it down and post it here.

What is the MD5 test and how does one do it?

Md5 testing is how you can verify the ISO you have is complete and consistent. You have failed to test your ISO so its health is in question.

"Okay, so I should do a custom installation and uncheck the Install 3rd party plugins box?" Yes. I already did installation without network and it works. Perhaps you also have a box at first screen to tell you want to install without Internet.

Can you help with this problem?
