I think the "alongside" is only to distinguish from 1)"within" meaning a wubi install, where ubuntu 's files are contained in a large file on the windows filesystem or 2) Replacing windows with Ubuntu. You simply select a partition (maybe on a separate disk) which is not the Windows partition (or related to windows like a recovery partition). Of course, without a separate disk, you are faces with the potentially risky task of shrinking the windows partition to make space for a new ubuntu partition. You should read the installation instructions carefully if that's necessary, backup all your files, defrag the disk before even attempting that.

Boot on Windows, defragment and shrink Windows partition to make free space (8GB can be enough to test Ubuntu).
After that, Ubuntu installer could use this free space to install both Ubuntu's partition.
BACKUP is never a bad idea!
