computer keeps freezing, and i have no proprietary drivers

Asked by rachel scott

I had windows vista, ended up with a virus (grr) so my dad sent me a Cd download with the Ubuntu 10.10. It downloaded fine, but my computer continues to freeze--I updated my RAM today and it is still freezing. I looked around and read that I could check to see if I have the right proprietary drivers-but none show up (system, administration, additional drivers). how do i find them if they aren't automatically there? and what else could be wrong if I have max. capacity of RAM?
Freezing has nothing to do with monitor and when I try to run tests, my computer freezes and I have to restart (I use the power button on tower)

An update to the latest kernel might help your problem. Turn off your screensaver (or make sure it's set to blank) since it causes some of these problems, (System/preferences/screensaver). Run update manager, (system/administration/updatemanager) and click the check. When the list of package updates appears, click install. If you cannot run long enough to update, maybe turn off all the packages except the ones starting with "linux" -- That should get the new kernel and make things easier for getting the rest.

"but my computer continues to freeze" => hardware issue
Check temperature of computer. Is there dust inside ? Are fans rotating (all fans: power, CPU, GPU) ?
Check RAM. Perhaps a memory chip became defective. You can also by removing old memory chip.
Sometimes can be due to micro-cuts from electrical delivery to home, or a lift in a building.

Can you help with this problem?
