I would like advice or recommendations on how to choose a net book.

Asked by Michael J. Kelly

I need a net book for internet access only. The user is borderline Luddite but would like to use Google and You-tube. I love Ubuntu but some devices(such as my mp3 player) do not work with it. The few net books rated on Consumer Reports don't say if they are Ubuntu compatible. Amazon has a net book listed under "Linux net book" but then lists Windows XP as its operating system. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.---MJK

Thank you all for the links. I did not grow up with computers so a lot of the answers I get here are over my head, but I think I have plenty of information to work with. My next posting should be about how a 55 year old with little time can bone up on tech speak." PCs for Dummies" seems to only contain info that I have already figured out on my own and "Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference" is the same at times and over my head at other times. I digress.

The net book I need would only be used only for internet access and video viewing via You Tube,Hulu, etc. I guess I could use a simpler answer if anyone has one. Thanks---MJK

I picked up a netbook last year to replace a failing laptop and wound up getting a MSI Wind 135. Price was a big factor but the other items were:
1) Wireless bg and n. Don't have n, but might in the future.
2)Win 7 as opposed to XP (since I needed a Windows OS too, and XP is nearing end of support). XP machines are cheaper if you don't need the windows stuff.
3)Built in camera and microphone
4)Expandable to 2G (Some are not expandable beyond 1G).
5)Three usb ports (Not concerned with usb3, since I have nothing which uses it).
6)VGA port since I want to be able to use an external (bigger) display.
7)Ethernet port, since wireless is sometimes problematic.
8)Don't care about the telephone/modem
9)Bluetooth would be nice, to allow keyboard/mouse, but the usb dongles are cheap (if you have a free usb port).

Can you help with this problem?
