10.10 download

Asked by Crj-todmorden

Hi folks,

Ubuntu virgin so please be gentle.
Downloaded 10.10 onto my PC no problems everything works fine. Used the same CD (not ISO) to install ont my brother's PC.
After a couple of tries it downloaded to the end ("restart & remove media from tray ......."). When the PC re-booted it has;

searching for boot record from cdrom ...not found
      " " " " " floppy...not found
      " " " " " scsi...not found

boot failure
reboot and select proper boot devices
or insert boot media jn selected boot device
press any key when ready

F8 at start up bring first boot device menue showing only floppy & cdrom
Pc will not open in any other mode.

When the 10.10 disk is used in the "try ubuntu" mode it works fine for a while till I need to put in a username or password.

Cheers ,"real novice" Col

If you don't see the hard disk as a boot option, you have either a hardware problem or a BIOS setting problem. This is before even grub runs, so not much else it could be. Hope it's BIOS, maybe letting the pc cool down will temporarily let the disk be seen, but other than reseating the hard disk itself, may not be much you can do. On the other hand, if you have usb ports you can boot from, maybe you can install Ubuntu onto one of those (4G min for a desktop).
