what is the minimum computer must I have to run Ubuntu

I have an old 286 computer . Can I run Ubuntu on it?

The computer is presently installed in a Bear emissions test machine. We want to salvage the computer to run Ubuntu on it.

According to wikipedia, linux does not directly support 286 CPUs.

There is a modified kernel, the ELKS which has 286 support.

Just remember, a 286 won't run much, certainly not ubuntu. It wont run puppy linux either.

You might be able install busybox on it, and get a command line running, but this would be tricky. With a lot of effort you might be able to run something as complex as pong.
