10.10 Server 64 bit CD-Rom install stops

Asked by Scott Glewwe

Trying to install Ubuntu Server 10.10, 64 bit on an AMD 64 bit system. Install proceeds fine until reaching the point where It is installing the base system. Window / progress bar appear for "Updating the list of available packages" and stops at 73%. I have tried install repeatedly, fails at same place. Have tried leaving the system alone for several hours to see if it was just slow. Have tried removing the encrypted LVM partition (going with no LVM). Tried verifying the disk - it's OK.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Did you md5sum the downloaded iso?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?DD
Did you select the media-check option before trying the actual installation?
Did you check your ram?

Hi Scott,

Maybe you could look at the other consoles to see if there is any error message showing ? You can switch between consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1 (F1 to F12).

Good luck,
Simon

The md5sum checked out fine, the cdrom disk checked out fine as well. System was running linux 10.10 desktop for a week before I decided to change it to a server - I'm figuring the Ram is OK. I checked the other consoles. #4 was the only one that had any activity and for the last couple of entries:

base-installer:
base-installer: W
base-installer: :
base-installer: Skipping nonexistent file /media/cdrom/dists/maverick/restricted/debian-installer/binary-amd64/Packages
base-installer:
init: starting pid 473, tty '/dev/tty2' : '-/bin/sh'
init: starting pid 474, tty '/dev/tty3' : '-/bin/sh'

could this be the error?

the other shells, 2 and 3, show:
BusyBox v1.15.3 (and so on)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.
I don't think these are a problem (but I have been wrong before)

"Updating the list of available packages" looks more like failure to download updates from network.
If it is the case, first install Ubuntu Server edition without network (question is asked at first installation screen). You will have a version only made from CD. After boot, and update from network. It will be more easy to debug if you have already a Ubuntu installation working.

Ummm, I have looked at the first install screen and I don't have an option for server without network. Did try OEM and minimal versions to see if that made a difference and it did not. Tried reburning the image on a new CD and that made no difference. removed second network card (this system is intended for firewall / proxy server use). This made no difference.

Ok tried a few more things:
Manually setting network options rather than using DHCP - Fail
Installing with NO network interfaces - fail
Installing server vertion 10.04 - fail
installing i386 version rather than AMD-64 failed at same place
Installing from thumb drive - failed but in a different location.
Was able to get 10.10 AMD-64 desktop version to install with no problems.

The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 with latest BIOS installed.
Using onboard video and networking. 2 GB ram. 1 TB SATA drive. AMD 64 bit processor.

This hardware (except new harddrive) is circa 2006 - not exactly latest and greatest. (and does work with desktop version)
I guess I am stuck with either using the desktop version and removing everything I don't want, installing everything I want (ouch!) or using something else.

I hate giving up on Ubuntu because of the great support network out there but....
Ubuntu Server 10.10 AMD-64 - epic fail..

Version 10.04.2 was just delivered. You could have a try.

@delance I use 10.04.2 too for Server use. It works fine. It is usually a better idea to use the LTS version

I did try 10.04.2 - sorry I didn't put the whole version number in my above post. It failed in the same place as 10.10. I am downloading natty (11.04) but I don't have high hopes. I am going to probably go with the working desktop install and try to secure it best I can - (squid, firewall, clamav, webmin cause this box is going in a closet) as it will be connected to cable modem 24/7.

Determined the problem to be an incompatibility with the dvd/cd-rom combo drive - Sony NEC Optiarc Model AD-7170A. I switched it to a standard cd-rom drive and was able to install 10.10 AMD-64 with no further problems. I don't know if this problem occurs with any dvd/cd-rom combo or just the Sony Optiarc series. Should this be reported as a bug?

Should this be reported as a bug? Yes. Someone could fix this issue with a new driver.

Can you help with this problem?
