Filesystem errors early in the installation process suggests that this may be due to a bad installation CD.

(1) Did you check the md5sum of the ISO file you downloaded? (See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM, skip to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM20on%20Windows if the OS you're currently using is Windows.)

(2) Did you burn the CD slowly?

(3) Did you verify the burned CD before attempting to install from it? (Boot the CD, when you see the keyboard and person symbols at the bottom of the screen press Spacebar, select your language, and then select the option "Check disc for defects". If that procedure is not clear, see http://zootlinux.blogspot.com/2010/05/check-disc-for-defects-in-ubuntu-1004.html.)

If you didn't do these things, please do them now. If the md5sum doesn't check out, download the ISO again. If errors are revealed when you do "Check disc for defects", burn it again.

If you do (or already did) all those things and it still doesn't work, then try booting from the CD, and immediately when you see the dots, press Escape. That should reveal the text under the dots. Then post again, and provide that text, as completely and exactly as possible. (I understand that if it flashes on the screen for just a brief time, then that will limit your ability to provide it.)

I had this problem a while ago. Is it an i686 or higher processor? Type uname -a in the terminal to find out.

What was the error message ?
As hard disk is not used during five dots are displayed after boot of Ubuntu CD, and you get an error about file system, it could be:
  - CD file system so check CD as advised Eliah (could be also a dirty lens, hardware issue also exist)
  - RAM file system so check RAM of your computer (can be done from BIOS)
But before, provide as whole error message, which will allow us to give better advice.

I advise you to check MD5 ISO image if you don't deleted it after burning: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM20on%20Windows
If you have not, download a new ISO image.
Else you could also be victim of a seldom bug about CD driver: try to install from a USB stick.

Can you help with this problem?
