Hello,

You need to check the validity of your download.

Use this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.

You also need to burn the iso image and not just copy it.

Regards,

Allan :)

Hi :)

Have you used Ubuntu before? If so have you installed it before too? If not then you will need to ask a few more questions about some of the detail.

Did you manage to reach the bios and change the boot-order? Often it is Del, Esc, F2, F6 or F8 but boot-up times are so fast these days that it might be tricky to press the key early enough. There isn't an elegant way to do this nowadays so i just keep pressing a couple of the likely options quickly and repetively from the moment the on button is pressed.

Ahambidge is right to say check the md5sum of the Cd but i usually start by just making a 2nd Cd at a slower burn-speed

Then boot-up a LiveCd session just to check if the hardware works well in Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCd
If not it is better to find a different distro from by having a look at some of those listed in DistroWatch
http://distrowatch.com
I would start by testing with SliTaz because it is only 30Mb and is usually very good at hardware detection. You are probably going to want a distro that uses the gnome desktop environment but we can work out the best one for the machine later because we are likely to be able to get Ubuntu working with any luck.

It is worth trying the Ubuntu Netbook Edition for any machines from laptops to hand-helds (so that includes notepads and netbooks which people often call laptops even tho they are something like 3/4 size or smaller). This is an img file instead of an iso and is meant to be put onto a usb-stick or something similar (Sd-Cards and stuff have worked wll) instead of a Cd. Laptops often have different components than desktops and the Netbook Edition has better drivers for them.

Please let us know how it goes with getting a LiveCd working. Also it would be good to hear if you can get into the bios or if that is a problem.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
