cmov missing in Pentium MMX 132MHz 144Mb

Asked by Pedro Sardinha

I have one Toshiba Satellite with Pentium MMX 132MHz processor and 144Mb RAM and I'm trying to instal Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 but I receive the error message:

This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
cmov
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I've burned a CD with the desktop i386 and it fails at the moment I press return with install Ubuntu selected.

I've searched in the forum but the only thing I found is the 0.6 missing in the server edition...

Regards!

What was the full filename of the ISO you downloaded?

Hi,

Even though it says i386 to contrast with the 64-bit x86-64 version, Ubuntu Desktop probably requires at least an i686 class CPU (Pentium Pro) to run.

The hardware is too old to comfortably run Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition in any case; you'd be looking into at least 384 MB of RAM and a faster processor to have it at all usable.

A lightweight Linux distribution might better suit your hardware. Lubuntu ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu ) might be an option although the wiki page suggests a Pentium II as a minimal CPU. Puppy Linux ( http://puppylinux.org ) is even more lightweight.

Your hardware is pretty old, and while it may be possible to install a lightweight modern Linux distribution on it, it may not be quite as easy as it would on more modern hardware. Good luck!

Hey!!!

What a fast answer!! Thanks Mycae and Mika!

The machine looks like the new PCs for the kids but with 5Kg and in gray...

Is the Lubuntu or Puppylinux easy to install and is easy to install applications like in Ubuntu?

This dinosaur is running (slowly walking) Win 98...

Thanks once more and kind regards!!

Lubuntu also requires a Pentium Pro or higher.

Puppy linux should run on your hardware, and does have a package management system -- it won't be quite as extensive as the ubuntu one, but last time I used it was not too bad.
