Netbook Remix starting issue

Asked by Bilbut

Hello all,

I've a problem when trying to test Ubuntu Netbook Remix from a USB stick. I MD5Sum checked the ISO I downloaded and installed it on my USB stick, either with Universal USB Installer and Unetbootin. I made the switch in the BIOS panel in order to boot my EEE PC 1510 from the USB stick.

What I get is the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, showing that the OS is loading. And I'm just stuck here. I cannot get to the screen offering to try Ubuntu or to install it. Where is the problem ? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I made a mistake : my netbook is a EEE PC 1015-PE.

You should verify that the image was properly written to the USB flash drive. To do this, boot from the USB flash drive, and when you see the keyboard and person logos at the bottom of the screen, press Spacebar. Select your language, and then select the menu option "Check disc for defects".

If you are unable to get this far, try writing the image to the USB flash drive again. If that doesn't solve the problem, then if possible, you should try booting from the USB flash drive on another computer, to see if it can get past that point. (It is not necessary to actually go through with the installation on the other computer!)

Hi,

I followed your instructions and no error was detected. When trying the USB stick on another computer (a PC), the Ubuntu system launched perfectly. So the problem seems to come from the netbook itself. And yet I chose this version of Ubuntu because it was precisely said as compatible with my EEE PC (http://www.splitbrain.org/blog/2010-08/27-asus_eeepc_1015pe). I don't know where I'm doing wrong.

When you get the screen with the dots, press ESC to switch to a text screen which shows errors. 10.10 started having problems with missing boot devices, so if you see complaints of cannot find fd0 (a floppy) repeating, disable the floppy in the boot sequence using the BIOS. Likewise the CDROM. Complaints about not being able to mount a hibernated Windows partition may be sidestepped by hitting F6 early on, skipping some graphics screens, and going straight to language selection...

Hi,

I pressed ESC when I get the screen with the dots, as you told me. Everything seemed to be fine and then it stopped. I had some warning but I don't know if these are bugs or not :

W: Skipping nonexistent file /cdrom/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages
W: Skipping nonexistent file /cdrom/dists/maverick/restricted/binary-i386/Packages

No value set for '/apps/netbook-launcher/favorites/favorites_list'
No value set for key: '/apps/netbook-launcher/favorites/favorites_list'
No value set for key: '/apps/netbook-launcher/favorites/favorites_list'

The last lines are the following:

PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
saned disabled; edit /ect/default/saned

Is the problem coming from this saned file ? Can I do something about it? Thanks again for your time and your help.

I tested with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 and it worked just fine ! If I cannot find where is the problem, I guess I will go with the 10.04. However, I would really like to make the 10.10 works (the 10.04 seems to not have the multi-desktop functionnality).

https://launchpad.net/~editoria-francisco succeeded to install on a "1015". You could ask him how he did.

As someone has apparently succeeded at installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer like yours, I recommend you consult them (as delance suggests) before trying the following.

If you've already installed Ubuntu 10.04, you can upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. Of course, given that the install CD for Ubuntu 10.10 didn't start, the system might stop working once you upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. But if that happens, then (1) we could continue working on this problem, or (2) you wouldn't have performed any customization to your system, so it wouldn't be too big a deal to do a fresh install of 10.04.

It is best to fully update your Ubuntu system, before upgrading it to a higher version of Ubuntu.

Hi,

I think I made some progress about the origin of the problem. Indeed, the 10.10 Desktop amd64 version works on the netbook. So I think the problem is coming from the fact the 10.10 netbook remix version is for 32-bits processors, and that mine is a 64-bits one. And if I'm not wrong, I can install the desktop version and then install the unity package, in order to have the same look than the netbook version, right ?

However, some new problems appear: the Wi-Fi is not working, and so does the multi-touch. But I'm sure I will find some tutorials on the Net about it.

If you have an 64-bit machine, then it is generally preferable to use the 64-bit (amd64) version of Ubuntu, even in cases where the 32-bit version works OK. (The 64-bit version allows you to better take advantage of your hardware's capabilities.) So your idea is a good one, even aside from its potential utility as a workaround for your current problem.

If you install Ubuntu Desktop Edition and you want to "turn it into" Ubuntu Netbook, you should install the package called ubuntu-netbook. Then, when you log in, you can select whether you want an Ubuntu Desktop Edition session or an Ubuntu Netbook session. (And it will remember your last selection.)

If you continue to experience problems wireless and multi-touch, please feel free to post separate questions about those issues. (They are separate topics from this one, and from each other as well.)

Can you help with this problem?
