difficulty installing ubuntu-netbook

Asked by tim ireland

i am trying to install ubuntu 10.10 netbook version onto a toshiba nb250-107 netbook, but it isn't working.
I have followed the instructions on umbuntu download page, using a (4gb) usb stick.

Initially i had the same problem as others with booting up (i had the message:
graphics installation failed
error setting up gfxboot
boot:)
i have got round this by typing "help" as suggested on various threads regarding same issue and it works.

So, i have had a look at and tried out ubuntu, and from what i see, i like it!

BUT, when i try and install it by clicking on the install icon in umbuntu it gets to the stage of preperaring to install and it just hangs. Can anyone advise please. No threads or web searching has help me find a solution so far ........ I have been told by some people that ubuntu is great and faster than windows OS - so i am very interested in trying it - but i am a little vexed at how much trouble this is prooving to be. I'd like to give it a proper go but unless anyone can help i must give up and continue with windows ....which is very dissapointing for what is supposed to be a great OS?!?!?!?!?

thanks, tim

Did you MD5 test the ISO you put on the USB stick?

yes, i read so many threads about similar issues and this seems to be the base response.

that is not the problem.

that's that person's standard response to a lot of problems. so don't get offended.

anyhoo, ver. 10.10 does NOT work on toshiba netbooks. you'll have to install version 10.04 instead.

thanks.
though a little confused because it seems to work ok - in that i can trial it - through the usb stick (if i write "help", as i mentioned in my original post).

does that mean i can trial it but not install it? strange, but then so is having to right "help" to make it run!

I did think about installing the 10.04 version, but i can't find a link to it on the ubuntu site - it only seems to offer 10.10
Would you/anyone have a link to 10.04 version download please?

If you want to install 10.04 (Lucid) then use

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

and you can change the version.

You can then install Ubuntu netbook by installing the 'ubuntu-netbook' package. Then you can upgrade if you want to.

yep. sometimes things work in the trial version but doesn't work when you install it. the trial version is a pre-installed image that somehow works. when you do an installation, it goes through a complete installation process and certain things don't work. hopefully this will be fixed in ver 11.04, which i'm not holding my breath.

anyhoo, click on the arrow in the drop down box that shows 10.10 and you'll see 10.04.

Lucid is a good suggestion, it's pretty damn solid. Whilst in the live environment I recommend you upgrade the installer by connecting to the web as normal then running:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubiquity

This may help things too :)

thanks for your suggestions, but i have managed to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 on my toshiba nb250 netbook.

in the end (having got very frustrated with this whole business) i went back to the downloaded file which the instructions tell you to put on a usb stick. i doubled clicked on the file "wubi.exe" .....and crossed my fingers! This was straight form the downloaded file on my desktop.

it went through an installation process and restarted my machine. On rebooting it came up with the option to boot up with windows 7 or ubuntu. Choosing the latter ubuntu installed itself (the wubi.exe file appears to set this up and partitioning the drive).

it works.

i'm on it now and all seems fine, i'm surfing the net, using the office apps and generally seeing what stuff does so i guess i have got the thing installed. woo hoo!

Now, 2 things:
1) it does not appear as fast as the windows 7 starter that came pre-installed on my machine? Why is that - i thought the point of ubuntu was that it was faster?
On the windows side i have set the appearance settings to basic and got rid of as much bloatware and programs that i dare - and i must say windows seems to be working v well.
So, why is ubuntu not living upto its reputation as a speedy OS in contrast to windows? I have not changed any ubuntu settings, so perhaps thats it but i don't know how and there appears no help file or instructuions to help on this?
2) I have spent a lot of time trying to get this thing to install - i have read many threads and suggested instructions on how to do it - and none worked - out of desperation i just decided 'ell with it and tried the bog standard windows 'click on the application' way. It seems to have worked, which is great .... but am i missing something here?
I am not ranting - i am very frustrated - i understood ubuntu is a great alt to windows - but really if someone wants to try it and can't install it then its not much good! I hope this thread will help others wishing to try ubuntu on their netbook and leave them with as much hair as when they start.

as i said, there are problems with 10.10 and toshiba netbooks.
ver 10.04 is quite fast on my nb305. you might want to install that instead of 10.10.
