Problem reading data from CD rom

Asked by Jim Beany

I have been trying to install Ubuntu on a computer that has no operating system and this keeps coming up "Problem reading data from CD-ROM. Please make sure it is in the drive. If it does not work check integrity of CD-Rom." I ordered the CD from On-disk and the funny thing is it started to install once and got through 73% of the install and hung up on "searching for additional update packages". Any help would be appreciated.

Among the options when it boots is to test the integrity of the CD. Can you run that?

It is possible that the disk was damaged. Do you have a high speed connection to download and burn your own CD?

I have a high speed connection but, every time I try and download it it is corrupt. That's why I paid for a CD from on-disk.com and I just checked it and it is corrupt

"searching for additional update packages" means Ubiquity (Ubuntu installer) try to download updates from network. This network who made you bought a CD.
At start of installation, in first screen, ask to install WITHOUT network. You can also unplug network. In this case, the installation will be done only from CD. At first reboot, you will get the desktop, and a few minutes after update-manager will ask you to update from network. But you will have a working Ubuntu even if network is broken.

Downloading with bit torrent may give better results than http. Can you install a bit torrent client? Do you check the md5 sum before burning?

Thanks for you responses. I checked the CD and it is corrupt. I contacted the person I bought it from and he is sending me another one that will be pre-tested.
