Basic steps to get Ubuntu 10.10 up and running.

Asked by Edwin Nielsen

I am unable to install drivers from cds (windows cds), that come with the variious hardware items (motherboard, video card, modem, etc),that make up a computer. And in order to have the computer scanned (to determine which driver is needed) and then download and install some of the latest drivers, I need to get on the internet with that computer. The "Wine" software is suppose to help with some windows programs. Will the "Wine" software enable the installation of drivers from windows cds on a computer with Ubuntu 10.10? I hope someone can give me information on how to get this basic setup accomplished on my computer.

You won't need to install drivers for your motherboard or modem -- these are built in and should, all things equal, just work. There are also built in open-source drivers for the video card, but the proprietary drivers may provide better performance. Printers and wifi cards can be problematic, but installation is most times possible, but requires a bit of diving in manufacturer's websites.

The windows drivers are designed to hook into the windows kernel -- they simply will not work under linux, which is a different system.

If there is specific hardware that is not working and you need to install it, please have a quick look on a search engine, and if you get stuck, you should be able to pop back here and ask about a specific device that we can help you with.

If you want a bit more explanantion, you can post back here and we will do our best to answer you more fully.

Can you help with this problem?
