Cannot install Ubuntu10.10 Desktop for my laptop along with WinXP

Asked by Jason Ma

Hi All,

I am trying to install Ubutu10.10 Desktop version for my laptop along with WinXP. I burned a CD for the installation. Once my laptop restarted, there is no Welcome window coming up and the computer is frozen at a pink screen with the word of "Ubuntu" on it.

Anyone has this problem before? Thanks!

What computer brand/model/graphics card do you have?
If you have an nvidia graphics card try this:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

That link also contains discussions of other kernel boot options that may be required.

To bcbc:

My laptop is SONY VAIO PCG-GRT30P and graphic card is NVIDIA Geforce FX Go5600. Thanks for the link. I am trying it now.

To delance:

Yes, I can get the following messages by pressing <ESC> when screen turns to purple with "Ubuntu 10.10":

stdin: error 0
/init: line7: can't open /dev/sdb: No medium found
/init: line7: can't open /dev/sdb: No medium found

I will get more message when I press other keys.

I'm not sure but I find references to sdb disk strange (sdb is second disk).
When you installed, did you have an external device connected ? I suspect kernel trying to mount a partition from such a device.
Could you disconnect all external mass memory storage (USB disk and key), and reinstall Grub from CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD

Thanks very much for your help - bcbc and delance.

The problem has been solved by following the instruction from bcbc's link. I changed my kernel parameter to noapic and set it as default parameter then Ubuntu can be installed and run properly.
