The required software for most of the commonly used network cards (and other builtin parts and peripherals) is contained on the ubuntu CDs and gets automatically installed.

According to HP's pages your compaq laptop has a Realtek RTL8102E/8111C Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. As far as I know these devices work with ubuntu 'out of the box' (maybe there are some weaknesses like not able to connect after resume from sleep as seen in some bug reports).
