ubuntu 10.10 upgrade wiped out other OS

Asked by elcana tom

I was upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.10. I was having Winows Xp and Ubuntu side by side. During the upgrade I chose "side by side with other OS and use the entire partition." After installation the entire disk was wiped out and only Ubuntu 10.10 there.
I had tried installation without selecting either "entire partition" or "entire disk." But I could not proceed without the choice.
What went wrong?
Now I am going to put back Xp and then try to install Ubuntu 10.10. Can I do it?

In the tutorial given at the Ubuntu site this part of the installation is vague (at least for me).

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for responding to my problem with Ubuntu installation. The procedure I followed is given below:

I was having Windows Xp and Ubuntu 9.10 in my desktop computer. I made a CD of Ubuntu 10.10 image by downloading from the Ubuntu website. I booted the system with CD in the drive and chose the trial mode. From the trial window I selected "Install Ubuntu." I followed the process: just clicked forward for the first window; next selected "Install alongside other OS" & clicked forward; next clicked forward - however, the installer asked me to select storage option; so, I selected "use entire partition" (instead of use entire disk) and clicked "install now;" then I followed the directions in the following steps. When the system restarted, there was only Ubuntu - no Windows XP or any of the data I had on the hard drive.

I want to have both Xp & Ubuntu on my computer. If only one OS is possible, I need to keep Windows. I am also thinking of installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 starter on my net book. Now I am hesitant. I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks, again.

I think I know what happened - you're not supposed to use the LiveCD from the website to Update. You are meant to use Update Manager, or the 'Alternate' CD.

Update Manager at System > Administration > Update Manager. The alternate CD is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/alternative-download#alternate .
