loading ubuntu

Asked by Desh Deepak

Earlier i have loaded my laptop with Ubuntu 10.04. (1) Due to some problems being faced in operating system (for example WiFi got deleted and not operational - not able to salvage), I would like to reload in laptop same 10.04 from my older CD (in laptop 10.04 would have been updated over time when WiFi was operational in laptop). Can it be reloaded with out trouble. or (2) can i load in this laptop (with 10.04) the new version 10.10, with out any difficulty.

Sure you can clean install Maverick, it might make life a little easier but Lucid is supported for a long time :)

1) I do not know what is Maverick or Lucid, what is the difference in 10.04 version (now in laptop) and new 10.10 version, which is better for home user. I only want to reload ubuntu operating system to solve my problem which are created because something would have got deleted by mistake and i want to salvage. In this context, i downloaded 10.10 and tried to load. Bios is set to load from CD (10.10 version) but still it does not load from CD and loads from hard disk (10.04 version). Please help.

2) Partitions in hard disk were there when earlier i was using Windows. When i loaded Ubuntu 10.04, by default it created 2 sections (a) Home folder (b)system files.

Looking for early resolution. Thanks.

Which version of Ubuntu is recommended for home user (not very much versed in computer). Whether to load in my laptop 10.04 version from the CD i have (at present laptop has 10.04) or 10.10 desktop version.

So long as you're installing the Desktop Edition (for a desktop or laptop), or the Netbook edition (for a netbook), they're both recommended for home users, and both are generally suitable even for inexperienced users.

10.10 provides newer features than 10.04 but is not supported for as long, which means that if you use 10.10, you will have to upgrade sooner. Some people who use 10.04 experience problems with 10.10 (and some people have a much better experience with 10.10...but if you know that 10.04 works well for you, then you are taking a risk by upgrading to 10.10. In addition, if something went wrong in your current 10.04 system that is making it not working properly, upgrading the existing system to 10.10 might or might not solve the problem. But of course, you could perform a clean installation of 10.10.

This is not perfect, but you can often get information about how well a new release of Ubuntu works by trying out the live CD/DVD system (go to Try Ubuntu instead of Install, when you boot the installation CD). This will not be quite the same experience as running it off your computer, and when you save files in the live CD system and then reboot they will disappear (unless you make sure to save them to your computer's hard drive or external media. A live CD/DVD system will also run slower, since your optical drive accesses data a lot slower than your hard drive. But many people could have saved a great deal of hassle by trying systems out with the live CD before installing them...

(Warning: That is not an exhaustive list of differences between live CD and installed Ubuntu systems.)
