can't install 10.10 in the largest avaliable free space

Asked by AXTEL Nemeth

this has been removed from the install menu-disaster! is there any way to do this without expert formatting skills. 10.10 just got hard to install and reinstall. used to be able to tell it to install in largest available free space, that was easy to do. now thats not a menu option -how can you do this now with the current installer? looks like things just got way harder for the average windows user-any way to do this without having linux formatting skills?

if i remember correctly, in order to use this option, you have to have created an empty partition first.

If you do not have unpartitioned space, I believe the option is removed

If you have free unpartitioned space left on your hard drive then it is quite easy to create an empty partition.

this article https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition/CreatingPartitions explains how to create an empty partition. Boot from the Ubuntu live cd and start the program gparted and follow the instructions from the article.

i gparted is not installed then follow the instructions from the article on how to install gparted.

i hope that helps.

okay. i looked it up. we should never doubt actionparsnip...errr....cough cough < > cough cough

go into windoze and defrag your hard drive. then resize (decrease) the partition to whatever size you think you'll need available for windoze. whatever's left over is the free partition and the installer will use that space as "the largest continuous free space"

I did have an empty partition-no it won't give an option to use the empty space-that has been removed starting in 10.10.. none of the answers helped...I have learned how to partition the drive in Ubuntu using the expert option in the install menu,, so that fixes it for me..that does not fix it for the average Windows user that has whacked out an empty partition to install it in, they are gonna be lost..it used to give an option to install into the empty partition (that was easy and worked well) this is getting harder not easier

The installer 'largest free space' option is not included in some Ubuntu versions installers, particularly the desktop CDs, it may have been retained in more of the 'Alternate' CDs.

it never has had the option to "install in the largest possible free space" since v10.04. Since then I have learned to partion the drive in linux, so I no longer need that option. It used to be so easy it was stupid, now it's a lot harder.
