Unable to use Ubuntu from CD

Asked by David Blackburn

I have a PC with 256K RAM, 60Gb HDD, 1.4Mhz AMD Athlon processor
I want to use Ubuntu (or similar) since the Windows Millenium Edition OS is not supported and the system has become unstable.
I realise full Ubuntu 10.10 will not operate properly on this PC spec so I am trying to use a variation. So far I have tried Puppy 511 and Lubuntu 10.10 as advised on other sites.
Now all of my attempts to trial Ubuntu from CD seem to behave in a similar way. The PC recognises the CD and reaches the menu to try ubuntu without install, install, memory test, etc.
I then try to select try ubuntu and the PC decides to reboot, so I am effectively in a loop of continuous reboots.
I have confirmed the checksum Md5 and I have an exact match. That said, the last version created reached a bit further. I obtained a screen full of text, the last line being:

[0.008000] [<c08190d7>] i386_start_kernel+0xd7/)xdf

I have spent a couple of days pouring over this and I'm now struggling.
I guess I need to understand whether I am flogging a dead horse or not.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 successfully on a 3 yr old separate PC - and the performance is outstanding. Ubuntu has resolved problems with the CD burner I have worked around for sometime.

Any help is gratefully received.
Oh yes, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?
Did you check the CD for defects once booted to?

1) Firstly Lubuntu is "Ubuntu". Lubuntu has an LXDE desktop environment whereas "Ubuntu" uses a Gnome desktop.

2) Secondly your RAM is on the low side. According to Wikipedia the current minimum system requirement of Ubuntu is 512Mb. OK, it can be run on less but it will run slow.

Either increase your amount of RAM or stick with Lubuntu or Xubuntu.

Minimum requirements for lubuntu are comparable to Pentium II or Celeron systems with a 128 Mb RAM configuration, which may yield a slow yet usable system with lubuntu.

So it'll run fine

go with lubuntu
lubuntu 10.10 is entirely free of charge available for download from http://lubuntu.net.

Thanks for your comments. All understood. I have decided to replace the RAM before going further because it may be the root cause of the failure to load LUBUNTU for example. I am waiting for the board to arrive.
I'll let you know what happens.

Before buying RAM, you could check with a previous version like 10.04.1, which install properly on Virtual Machine of 256MB.

Can you help with this problem?
