Can you give the make and model of the laptop.

Can you also give the output of:

sudo lshw -C disk; cat /etc/fstab

What is output?

Thanks

You need to install:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-maverick-generic

To get sound working. Can you expand on "dvd rom is not able to detect"

Thanks

The installed OS is external to how you mean by "dvd rom is not able to detect" I need to understand what you mean by the phrase so I can troubleshoot. It could have many meanings so we need the one YOU mean.

In ubuntu there is very little compiling at all, it uses binaries so installs quick.

Did you get the package installed?

You may only have 4 primary partitions on a disk, if you need more you must set one as an extended partition and you can set as many logical partitions as you wish within that.
