You could try Lubuntu, Ubuntu with LXDE, which is another lite version of Ubuntu. But there are other lightweight linux distros you could try, like linux mint ;)

1) Which disk did you try to install from? The Desktop disk is a LiveCD and takes 350+Mb to install. The Alternate disk is a straight install and uses only 64Mb. Try the Alternate.

2) If Xubuntu or Lubuntu are no good have a look at "Modest Spec or Barebones Installation of Ubuntu" - http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal and "Ubuntu Minimal Desktop" - http://wiki.dennyhalim.com/ubuntu-minimal-desktop

3) Of course youi would be better with more RAM.

+1 for lubuntu. To me it's the best ubuntu derivitive. Sadly it is not Canonical approved but its light and extremely functional. Xubuntu seems to be losing its lightness.
Be sure to md5 test the iso you download and if you use a cd, burn as slow as possible.

+1 for lubuntu. Your laptop should run fairly with Lubuntu https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu#System requirements.
You download your copy here http://lubuntu.net/

If you are stoped at partitioner stage, you could use a Live CD to partition before installation.
In this case, take 2GB for swap, and the rest for ext4.
You can also make two ext4 partitions instead of one, one of 10GB for /, and the remainder for "/home".
