xp setup cd won't run and can't boot to xp disk

Asked by keith johnson

Installed Ubuntu my keyboard and mouse quit working. Was working then locked up. Plugged in microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse that worked except mouse so jerky can barely use. Not to sure I want Ubuntu, now!!! Also won't run xp setup disk or boot from disk. Help I want my computer back. Please tell me how to reinstall xp. When I try to run xp disk I get Archive: /media/VX2PFPP_EN/setup.exe
[/media/VX2PFPP_EN/setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/VX2PFPP_EN/setup.exe or
/media/VX2PFPP_EN/setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/VX2PFPP_EN/setup.exe.ZIP, period.
Please help!!! Thanks

Thats not how you use a boot disk. You need to put the disk in and reboot. Ubuntu has nothing to do with this procedure.

Also note that windows will wipe the ubuntu bootloader during its install (it doesn't play nice with other OSs), so you have to perform a bootloader recovery if you wish to get back to ubuntu.

OK 1st Sorry newbie in panic, I thought I was going to not be able to get xp to load. After calming down and researching (the reason for sorry!). The answer was simple. Oh, I know that is not how boot disks work, after the disk won't boot, I tried to run setup from Ubuntu. Doesn't work that is the error message message I got. Now back to what I did to fix.I booted to live-cd and ran "gpart?" and deleted the partition. Restated computer and the xp disk booted. That's how I am answering now. LOL I would still like to try Ubuntu if someone will tell me why my regular mouse and keyboard worked with Live-cd and about 1 minute on running from hard drive. I could use a wireless Microsoft mouse and keyboard except the mouse was REAL jumpy. If someone can tell how stop that I'll try again.

Just to let you know my luck run, I did back-up the whole computer when I started to have problems, back-up went fine. Rebooted and smelled that funny electrical burning smell. Turned power back on nothing, I know where the smell came from. ROFLMAO Lucky for me my son-in-law gave me one a couple months ago. Swap out and up and running.
Is it possible to install Ubuntu on a external usb hhd, then I could try by booting from usb-hhd as that is an opinion in my BIOS? And would this keep Grub? from messing with the partition on internal drive?
Boot to live-cd and click create boot disk and put that on ex-hdd?
Again I say thanks for anyone's time to help me and be nice I am a really really new.
One last thing, should I start a new thread for this and call this solved???

Yes, though this may be a little slower than a local drive, due to limited bandwidth on the USB cable. You may want to disconnect your windows HDD before you do the install, and you will have to alter the boot order each time you restart.

If you believe your problem is solved, yes.
