Problem Installing version 10.10

Asked by Serge Feldmansky

I have an old PIII laptop that I am planning to use to play wiht Ubuntu. I download the lates version [10.10] and tried to install it. It ask me what I want to do, i.e. run from CD or install on hard drive. I choose indtall on hard Drive. After that my screen doesn;t show anything. My guess its an issue with the video card but I have no idea how to fix it. Any suggestions?

it does except for memory. My machine only have 756 MB.

Actually 756 MB is usually enough for Desktop to work. The real issue is the probably the video card. I propose two solutions:

1) Try Xubuntu which is a lighter version of Ubuntu for old machines
2) or Try installing Ubuntu using the Alternate CD. This has the benefit to bypass any issues with the video card until the installation.

Try intalling the ubuntu from "install inside window option" maybe that does gonna work if it is the issue with your memory or you may also try installing it virtually using VMware or other virtual machines if that is the issue with your graphics card. what ever you are into.
even my 256-mb desktop still supports a ubuntu 9.04 LTS and sidux version with a flavour of windows xp 64 bit running on it happily.

If you have an issue with usual installation due to graphic card, you will have the same with Wubi ("install inside window option"). By using alternative distros, you will able to install same Ubuntu as used for CD boot and to get system upgrades which could fix your graphic card issue.
On your screen, do you have a blinking cursor at upper left or really nothing ?
