startup disk with all updates

Asked by jayakumar

Kubuntu has a system menu to create startup disk. It works well [kubuntu 10.10] The disk is created based upon an .iso file, which gives us a ditto version of the original CD. Is there any provision to create a startup disk incorporating all the updates installed in the current system? I mean to create a startup disk with all the programs, configurations, upgrades etc installed- a ditto copy for installation into another machine.

You can use the daily build, or you can customize the ISO using:

With a suitable bit of fiddling, and removing any packages you don't need, so you can get the right size, you could create a USB or DVD using the raw (or compressed) hard drive of a fully updated machine. This could be done by creating a bit-for-bit copy of the drive using the tool "dd", even though it is a massive hack.

This could be made as single file, and then dumped on removable media or an external disk. Once done, you could simply use a Live CD to boot the new machine, then DD the contents onto the drive. If done right (e.g. checking hard disk order) this should allow you to boot an exact duplicate of the original system. Note that various inter-machine changes could yield this process untenable, but if you have a whole bunch of similar machines, then this could work.

I have downloaded the package UCK [ubuntu customisation kit] and with that a livecd.iso was created.
Thank you, actionparsnip
