BIOS for eee pc netbook

Asked by Joel Stein

This is really off the wall and I hope someone can help. I've been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 onto my wife's netbook pc. It currently has windows XP which we hate. Anyway, I can get to the dos screen through F8 but there are no boot options on it. I have a hunch the thing was built around XP and there is no way to do a "boot from flashdrive" option. There's not even a "boot from disc" option. No options at all. Is there another page with the bios options or am I out of luck? All it has is "Open Windows normally" and reboot. It does have the safe mode and all that.

Inset the USB device and reboot the system. Press F11 and/or F12 and you should be able to select USB boot

I think its F2. Asus has quick boot enabled as well, so the BIOS is very quick, and may not let you know. Just keep tapping the key quickly at boot.

Here's how you boot from the stick: after pressing the power button, the F2 key should be pushed a couple of times to get into the eeePC's BIOS menus. The "quick boot" under the Boot tab should be disabled. Use F10 to save the setting and then as the Netbook reboots hold down the ESC key.

A menu to boot from either the hard drive or the USB stick will appear. Choose the stick and press Return. After a minute or two, the familiar Ubuntu-like startup menu will show up.

The boot menu should look like this:
