install hangs at splash screen

Though there are several questions similar to this, couldn't quite find the answer.

Installing from a bootable CD ver 10.10...starts to boot from cd, but just hangs at the very simpl ubuntu screen. the scrolling dots never quit...but no progress at all.

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

When you see screen with 5 dots, press <ESC> key, and post last displayed lines.
@John is right. You probably have a graphic issue.
Could you also choose at boot "Try without install" instead of "Install" and then run, if you succeed to reach Desktop, System->Administration->Test System.
