You probably have to change the boot order in the BIOS. On powerup, the first screen is usually a vendor splash screen with some text to change the boot order, or get into the BIOS setup. Typical keys are ESC, DEL, F10, etc. varies by machine. Once in the BIOS setup, find the boot order, and move the usb key or disk to be before the internal hard disk. save and exit. The next reboot should find the Ubuntu stick.

You have to check MD5 of downloaded ISO: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
When you try to boot from USB key, what happens exactly ?
The LED of USB stick is ON ?
You get a screen with "Install"/"Try without" ?
The BIOS search for bootable device fails ?

Can you help with this problem?
