Installaing Ubuntu on a seperate drive

Asked by Mike Thomlinson

My laptop has 2 drives, one is loaded with windows 7 and the other one is spare. I would like to install Ubuntu on the spare drive for now and the problem is that at the point of installation I cannot identify which drive is which (under windows the drives are labelled C and D). How can I identify which is which under Ubuntu OS?
Thanks

Use custom partitioning and install to that

If you press CTRL+ALT+T you can run:

sudo parted -l

and see what partitions are on what so you know the layout of each disk.

I advise you to switch drives and make Ubuntu the first one, so your Windows disk will remain untouched.
The first drive is named sda, and the second one sdb.
During installation, the installer (Ubiquity) should display size of both disks.
If disks are not the same size, you will identify each one.
If you need more help, post again.

Can you help with this problem?
