Does the server need to be certified in order for a sucessful install?

Asked by Jackson

I was asked to install Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS (Hardy Heron) on a HP DL180 G6
After looking at this page
http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/200907-3394/

I see that it is not certified for the version I want to run. Does this mean it will not successfully install or is it just not "officially" supported?

***
I get the error

Unable to install the selected kernel
An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into the target system.

Kernel package: 'linux-server'
***

Is this due to an installer error or is my hardware just not supported with this version of the Ubuntu server software?

You will just have issues installing and/or setting up and/or some hardware may not work

as to your error, I will ask the same 3 questions I give all installers and expect the usual reply:

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD slowly?
Did you check the CD for defects once booted to?

Thanks

Thanks for the info actionparsnip. Looks like the older version does not support some of the hardware, I tried 10.04 LTS and it installed w/o an issue,
