Downgrade Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Burkhard maedler

Because of the broken XDMCP-server in 10.10, I need to downgrade to 9.10 (10.04 was a terrible release).
How can I downgrade from 10.10 to Ubuntu 9.10 without loosing any configuration etc.?

You must reinstall if you want the older release. You can then restore your configs etc from your backup.

There is no way to "downgrade" from a newer release to an older release.

Thanks, that answers my question although not satisfactory.
Why do push the Ubuntu developers a new release out if something as fundamental as XDMCP isn't properly integrated?
No complains ever again about Windows.
The broken XDMCP was not on the release notes before I installed their 10.10 - that really sucks.
