How backup Ubuntu 9,04 system before I attempt installing 10.10?

Asked by hemantkarandikar

I have Ubuntu 9.04 working well on my HP Mini 110 netbook. I am required to install Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook on this machine. My previous experience of upgrading to 9.10 from 9.04 was disastrous since the wifi did not work at all (the netbook has broadcom chips) and I had to revert to 9.04.

The netbook has no ethernet port so wired internet access is not possible.

Therefore I suppose it will be better if I have system backup of 9.04 so that I can go back to it if something goes wrong during new install.

Incidentally, I tried live CD of 10.10 Netbook remix. My netbook hangs. The desktop version live CD works but dialog boxes do not fit on the scree.

I will appreciate guidance. I am a business user and not a linux expert.

It's a real issue.

Before installing Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), make a bootable USB key (or a CD, but a USB key with persistent memory is better). Then boot in this key, and select "Try without install", then System->Administration->Test System and check hardware (graphic card, sound, Ethernet wired and WIFI) to be sure Ubuntu 10.10 have the good drivers.
If it didn't work, you can install, as in a classical configuration, some drivers to verify a solution before installing.

This process will make your sure your hardware is well managed. Unfortunately, they could be some issue with update-manager software. So make a backup of your home directory.

Thanks for your help. I will try this over the weekend.

@Federico: A question. If the Ubuntu 10.0 Netbook Remix fails to install correctly? How do I restore the backed up system? I guess I will need a booting usb \ cd. What happens to the GRUB when I try to install a new system over existing system?

Here's how to restore the grub. You will be using grub2, so the details about checking which grub you are running are not needed.
