Need info about cpu/memory limits

Asked by Kris Srini

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I'm in the process of testing Ubuntu as a VM and I'm unable to determine if a bug is in Ubuntu or the product I'm testing. In that regard, it will be helpful, if I can find details regarding the maximum supported(certified) CPUs and the maximum supported (certified) memory that can be used with Ubuntu. I'm looking for something like http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/

It would be nice if you could provide information for Ubunt 8.04 at the least.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

It's a easy question, as you already provided answer.
These limits are related to linux kernel and not the distribution.
So they are the same as Red Hat.
So must be aware of difference between
   32 bits kernel => 3.2GB
   32 bits pae kernel => more than 3.2GB (don't know exactly how, but at least four times)
   64 bits kernel => more than amount of physical memory you will succeed to get
In your link I see:
Kernel and OS features
Kernel foundation Linux 2.4.21 Linux 2.6.9 Linux 2.6.18 2.6.32 - 2.6.34
Look at 8.04 to see which kernel is used. Be aware that in 6 month 8.04 will not be maintained, and that current LTS is 10.04 (Lucid Lynx).

Can you help with this problem?
